Article Abstract:
The US and European defense industries are undergoing changes, with the US industry the first to show a trend toward consolidation. British Aerospace plans a merger with DaimlerChrysler Aerospace, and the new firm may form the core of a European Aerospace and Defense Company (EADC). Technology for gathering information is seen as crucial for new defense needs, and the US has superiority in this type of technology. The European defense industry is more fragmented and is hampered by national differences. It is unclear whether the planned EADC will exacerbate rivalries between the US and Europe.

Article Abstract:
Gunpowder was invented by the Chinese, andfirst used in European warfare in 1324, at the siege of Metz. This development meant the defenders lost their advantage in sieges, since cannons could be used to attack castle walls. Guns were then developed in different ways, such as improvements to their loading mechanisms. Gunpowder was seen as the best explosive until the 19th century, when chemistry was developing rapidly. Physicists then brought their skills to bear on the problem, producing even greater explosions.
