Article Abstract:
Petroliam Nasional Bhd. (Petronas), Malaysia's national oil company, is currently negotiating to acquire controlling stakes in publicly held Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd. (Proton) and the auto maker's distributor, Edaran Otomobil Nasional (EON). According to Petronas officials, the company has started preliminary talks with cash-strapped Hicom Holdings Bhd., which holds 32% of EON and 27.2% of Proton. Petronas and Hicom have not yet set a price for the deals, but analysts predict the price could reach almost 1.3 billion ringgit ($342.1 million). If Petronas succeeds in acquiring the stakes, it would surely fuel the debate on Kuala Lumpur's move in rescuing big companies with public money.
