Pearson PLC is planning to sell a reference unit acquired from Simon & Schuster Inc. to Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst for $1 billion. The item for sale formed part of the educational publishing business bought from Simon. Pearson is ranked on top of the $16-billion educational publishing business because of the deal and becomes the No.2 rival for the US schools market after McGraw-Hill Cos. Pearson is pressured to sell non-core businesses such as the wax museum and newspaper because of the recent acquisition. The British media group is also being tasked to hasten its restructuring program.
