Pearson expected to sell some noncore businesses

Article Abstract:

Pearson PLC is planning to sell a reference unit acquired from Simon & Schuster Inc. to Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst for $1 billion. The item for sale formed part of the educational publishing business bought from Simon. Pearson is ranked on top of the $16-billion educational publishing business because of the deal and becomes the No.2 rival for the US schools market after McGraw-Hill Cos. Pearson is pressured to sell non-core businesses such as the wax museum and newspaper because of the recent acquisition. The British media group is also being tasked to hasten its restructuring program.

Phillips, Conoco agree to giant energy merger

Conoco Inc. has reached a deal to merge with Phillips Petroleum Co. in a transaction that will form an entity with approximately $35 billion in market capitalization. The stock merger represents the continuing consolidation trend taking place in the energy industry.

Conoco purchase may start spree of energy deals
