Peace at last in Punjab: India

Article Abstract:

The violence between Hindus and Sikhs has finally come to an end in the Punjab province of India. During the fighting, over 200 people were killed a month, on average. Strong anti-terrorist efforts by the police were condemned by some, but proved an effective tool against violence.

Less than 30% of registered voters cast ballots in elections in Punjab, India. Voters in villages stayed home because of terrorist threats from Sikh militants. The results of the election and a history of the troubled area are presented.
