Capacity planning for intensive care units

Article Abstract:

A simulation model was utilized to illustrate bed capacity planning in intensive care units of hospitals. The model revealed the existence of a non-linear relationship between quantity of beds, mean occupancy level and quantity of patients to be transferred due to unavailability of bed space. An extensive trade off between bed occupancy and the quantity of transfers was noted.
