Painted ladies

Article Abstract:

Chinese artist Wei Dong says he is unlike his contemporaries who infuse political messages into their art, but others disagree. Wei claims that his fleshy, surreal paintings have no message whatsoever. The People's Liberation Army uniforms he incorporates in his paintings are nostalgia and carry no social commentary. He says his work is too self-centered to feel a responsibility to society. Others say his paintings are indeed reactions to social corruption. The art world apparently sees something special in the paintings, judging from the prices they fetch.

Programmed for fun

Article Abstract:

Charles Wang is the unassuming chairman of Computer Associates, the company he co-founded in 1976 which has grown into the third largest software firm in the US. Despite the fact that he was once a software programmer, Wang believes that programmers are the most important people in the company but should only be allowed to program code. Computer Associates specializes in software sold directly to businesses and as a result is largely unknown to most consumers.

Barbarians at the gate

Article Abstract:

The Baduy people who live in west Java, Indonesia, are determined to preserve their autonomy and traditions, and refuse to have contact with any form of modernity. They stick closely to the their customary laws, even though they are well aware, for example, that modern medicine could cure many of the health problems which afflict them. They are among many indigenous peoples across Asia who are fleeing in the face of recent modernisation and industrialisation.
