POLAND: GOALS OF FRENCH RETAILERS

Article Abstract:

French retailers, who arrived in Poland after the Austrian retail chain Billa and the German retail chain Hit, want to speed up their development there before the market reaches saturation. According to estimates, Warsaw, which has room for twenty hypermarkets, will reach saturation within two years, while the entire Polish market is expected to reach the saturation point in 2005. Carrefour is the latest French retail group to arrive in Poland with the opening of a hypermarket in Warsaw in 1998. Carrefour knows it will have to act quickly in order to gain ground. A new opening is forecast by the second half of 1999, and several products are being studied, particularly in Katowice, Wroclaw and Czestochowa. Leclerc, Casino's Geant, Auchan, and Intermarche are already present in Poland, must cope with competition from the new operators: Carrefour and the German group Metro, with the Rea retail chain.
