Multinationals may see China as representing a large potential market, but there are some drawbacks to operating in China such as price caps for pharmaceuticals which foreign firms claim favor Chinese companies. Cutting the cost of drugs is seen as an effective way of cutting health care costs in China, which also aims to tackle problems of corruption linked to the way that drugs are distributed. Multinationals are concerned that their future prospects have been hit due to the introduction of new rules.

Courting trouble

Article Abstract:

American Home Products (AHP) is to merge with Warner Lambert and this will create a company ranking in the top two world wide in terms of sales of pharamceuticals, estimated at over $15 billion. American Warner will be the name of the new company. AHP has previously sought to carry out mergers but has not succeeded. The company has had problems with product liablity, and has been affected by problems with its agribusiness division. Both companies have product pipelines that could produce useful drugs.

Of processes, pills and profits

Article Abstract:

Drug companies have traditionally put almost all of their resources into product research and development, theorizing that almost all drug industry profits depend on new products. A new theory though states that more should be put into manufacturing so that products can come to market quicker.
