Auerbach's research into the health effects of smoking was one of the leading causes in the decline of smoking in the US and several other countries. His research found that smoking creates changes in the lungs that can lead to cancer. His research stood up to ridicule by the tobacco industry.

It is now estimated that 20% of the people living in developed nations, about 250 million people, will die because of tobacco smoking. They will die on average 23 years sooner than people who do not smoke. Women are catching up to men as smoking fatality statistics.
