Optimal design of a distributed network with a two-level hierarchical structure

Article Abstract:

A discussion is presented of the difficulties encountered in the topological design of a network with a two-level hierarchical structure and a full-meshed embedded backbone network. The problem is treated as a quadratic 0-1 programming model and as a linear one as well. The proposed efficient solution assumes that the latter is a version of the uncapacitated facility problem. The solution can also be used to design large data communication and transportation systems.

Capacitated facilities are analyzed in detail with the problem presented using a natural mixed integer formulation. Polyhedral properties are also analyzed.
