Article Abstract:

Four opposition leaders have been arrested in Malaysia, as well as a printer in Jan 2000. The prime minister, Mahathir Mohamen, was on holiday at the time, and his home minister and deputy, Abdullah Badawi, argues that political revenge was not the motive. Opposition groups made some gains in elections in Nov 1999. Meanwhile, there is concern within the ruling United Malays National Organization that no vote will be held for the party's top positions, since some members would like to see a vote for the posts.

PAS is an Islamist party which has become popular in northern Malaysia, the heartland of the Malay vote where support had been strong for Mohamad Mahathir. His United Malays National Organization (UMNO) selected a mosque guardian for a by-election, seen as crucial for the future of Malaysia. The government has been described as secular by some Islamic priests. Mahathir is due to retire but has dealt with a plan to remove him as UMNO leader, so could stay on.
