Government is aiming at increasing the supply of housing. In consultation paper PPG3 - supporting the delivery of new housing, the government has asked the authorities to review lands allocated for industrial and commercial use, which is unsustainable, and consider the same for housing or mixed use development.

The key highlights of the new draft planning policy statement on town centres, which gives housing and offices equal emphasis with retail, is discussed. Under this policy, the planners will be called to inject a vision into town-centre planning, the approaches for which are discussed.
