The Welsh do not have a rigid class system, as England, does, and the little class pressure that exists flows upward, not downward. Wales, a region of some 2.9 million people, has managed to retain its cultural distinctiveness, despite pervasive English influences.

The list of 100 powerful and influential people in England shows that the class system is still in place. Only four women are listed, and 66% of the 100 were privately educated. The top 100 of 1992 is compared to the top 100 of 1972.
