Polish finance minister Andrzej Olechowski resigned from his position in the wake of a budget disagreement with the Sejm, the country's parliament. The Sejm voted an increase in public spending that would make the deficit unacceptably large, causing the International Monetary Fund to rescind an aid package that Olechowski had negotiated.

Many Poles are now tired of tough reforms, despite the real improvements to their lives which have been made since the collapse of communism. However, Poland urgently needs further reforms to tackle unemployment and the crisis in public finances.

India's fractious coalition government must push economic reforms that are more radical than the ones introduced during 1991-1993. Labor-law reform and privatization of public companies cannot be implemented without approval of the electorate.
