Nokia Corp. of Finland has announced plans for an expansion of research base through the purchase of a number of companies in the Internet-technology business within 1999. The growth in the research base would enable the firm to develop new mobile phones and other mobile technologies. Nokia intends to bolster equipping of future series of mobile phones with advanced capability of data transfer, plus grow research capabilities for other forms of mobile communications via purchases. Nokia's proposed buys could be partly financed by its new $100-million venture-capital fund.

StoraEnso Corp. announced that it is planning to sell off its power assets and that it will look into expanding even further into the European and Asian markets. StoraEnso, a Finnish-Swedish paper group, said it will sell 2 billion euros worth of power assets. The company said that it wants to concentrate on the manufacture of publication papers, fine papers, and packaging boards. StoraEnso will sell its power assets which are not located at the company's Nordic paper mills.
