Some people believe that the UK Conservative Party is finished as a real political force, regardless of whether Kenneth Clarke or Iain Duncan Smith are elected leader. However, Labour is not invincible and the divisions within the Conservative Party do not mean the end of the party.

Squabbles within the Conservative Party could lead it to a 1997 election debacle as bad as Labour suffered in 1983. The infighting will cause many normally Tory voters to switch to Labour, who would not be happy once an overwhelming Labour majority begins to govern.
