Grand International Airways (Grand Air) and its two-aircraft fleet hardly seems a threat to the national flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL). However, the one-year old company is confident that it will be able to garner a respectable share of the market by emphasizing service on its flights. Grand Air is only the first of many new airlines planning to go against PAL and observers state that this would redound to the benefit of Filipino air travelers.

PAL expansion takes off with launch of new jet

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has started its expansion program through its purchase of Airbus Industrie and Boeing Co. aircraft. The airline company is set to buy a total of 28 Airbus and seven airplanes. With this move, PAL aims to improve on its punctuality record and effectively compete with new local airline companies offering international flights. In so doing, it hopes to prevent further financial losses.

Airlines move to clean up region's flying ashtrays

Asian airlines have become less friendly to smokers with the imposition of smoking bans on many routes. While some airlines simply followed competitors, others claim the smoking ban is a response to demands from health-conscious consumers. Some Asian airlines have also denied themselves of millions of dollars in yearly revenue by halting sales of duty-free cigarettes on board.
