New drugs for old habits

Article Abstract:

New treatments for addiction to alcohol andother drugs include Merck Lipha's acamprosate. New treatments may take some time to be accepted, partly because addiction is sometimes seen as a moral rather than a medical issue. Distribution and administration methods of treatments could also be improved. Neurosearch is developing a cocaine treatment that prevents the drug from boosting dopomaine levels. Other research uses the immune system to combat abuse. Drug companies may be reluctant to develop treatments for abuse where users tend to be poor, despite the benefits to the wider economy of such treatments.
