Native talent: Maori entrepreneurs are making a comeback

Entrepreneurial Maoris in New Zealand are proving successful at a range of businesses despite a widespread belief that they are not good in that field. Maori finance companies have backed many with modest loans, but settlements with the govt over past injustices and land seizures could be a catalyst for more grand ventures. However, the govt hopes to keep settlements from the Treaty of Waitangi Tribunal under NZ$1 billion. Tribes are also gaining more authority over their own affairs in education, healthcare, and other areas.

Making amends

The New Zealand government and the leaders of the country's indigenous Maori community see the bidding for control of Sealord Products Ltd, the nation's largest inshore fishing company, as the quickest way to solve the problem of conflicting property claims. The goverment hopes the agreement to give the Maori a 50% stake in the company would help settle the century-long history of inter-racial grievances since lasting racial harmony is essential for the country's social stability.

Article Abstract:

France's decision to press ahead with nuclear weapons tests in the South Pacific has had a variety of serious political effects in the region. In the face of almost universal condemnation, France accused its critics of having an anti-France agenda, trying to remove it so they could dominate the region more effectively. Tahiti saw a dangerous blend of anti-nuclear protest and pro-independence anger that led to serious riots.
