Article Abstract:
Napolein Bonaparte was exiled in 1815, after having set up an empire in Europe through military campaigns. He imposed civil order in France,and conquered other countries. These conquests came to be too expensive for France, and Bonaparte lost support from the new French elite. He set up institutions in France which have persisted, in administration, law and elsewhere. There was no cause that Bonaparte could rally people to, and that was a major weakness.

A not so certain idea of France
Article Abstract:
There has been a quiet revolution in the way French history is being taught in France today. There is more emphasis on ideas and interdisciplinary approaches and less on rote learning and 'Great Men.' Revisionist perspectives on France's role in World War II are also being taught.

Achtung! Too many Nazis
Article Abstract:
History teaching in UK schools is too narrow and is dominated by Nazi Germany, according to headteacher Martin Roberts. Roberts believes this is because 'feelgood' history, with topics such as Hitler or the Tudors, makes the British feel better about themselves.
