French president Francois Mitterrand is under pressure to replace unpopular prime minister Edith Cresson. The pressure will grow if the Socialists get as soundly beaten in the upcoming regional elections as expected. A popular replacement would be European Commission president Jacques Delors.

Five Socialist leaders from Southern Europe, Francois Mitterrand, Felipe Gonzalez, Mario Soares, Bettino Craxi, and Andreas Papandreou, met on the island of Corfu in 1980, and within two years all were prime ministers or presidents. However, the mid-1990s finds their political power fading.
