Weighty problem: wrestler's remarks spark new US-Japan row

Article Abstract:

Konishiki, a non-Japanese sumo wrestler, has been trying to grapple with possible reasons as to why he has not yet been named yokuzuna, or grand champion of Japan's national sport. Weighing 264 kg, the 28-year old Konishiki has already attainedozeki rank, the highest level so far reached by a foreign sumo wrestler. His speculation that his not being designated yokuzuna has roots in racial discrimination has fueled a controversy begun by an article against foreign yokuzuna written by historian Noboru Kojima.

Train the foreigner

Article Abstract:

Japan has finally recognized the futility of banning the influx of foreign unskilled workers. There is a pending bill that permits a maximum of 100,000 foreign unskilled workers to work in the country under a two-year training grant. Japan, despite the economic recession, has a very low 2.1% unemployment rate and it is hard pressed filling in jobs that are either considered dirty, dangerous or hard. This gap could easily be filled up by these immigrants.
