France has seen majority of its population travel overseas independently as they plan their own holiday agenda and finding their own accommodation. These are in contrast of the French's European counterparts. Of the 14% of French adults travelling overseas for their holiday in 1996, less than half has booked a package holiday which comprised of accommodation. The package also included more than a quarter staying free with friends or family, or in second homes. Camping remains popular as a cheap form of accommodation and is used by 7.9% of tourist.

France is seeing a growing trend towards longer haul destinations in taking holidays as air fares become more affordable, despite a tradition to stay within the country. One of the long-haul sites of the population is the Caribbean particularly Cuba, a destination providing a historial fascination or the French. French tour operators and hotel groups have been fast to respond to the growth in demand by opening new hotels and holiday villages in Cuba. The island saw a 20% increase in French tourists in 1995 to 35,000 people.

Article Abstract:

The airplane was increasingly used as a mode of transportation for outgoing tourism in France during 1992 to 1996. The said form of transportation overtook use of cars by 1995 and is attributed to reduced airfares. The importance of car travel is not projected to decrease as numerous individuals in France continue to holiday in neighboring Spain and Italy. Cars represent the easiest, most convenient and the cheapest form of transports for many families.
