French take majority of their summer holidays in August with over 50% of tourist staying with family or friends or going to a second residence. The population are traditional in terms of holiday patterns with destinations and type of holiday minimally shifting from year to year. Provence-Cote d' Azur is the most popular destination with 12.4% of French domestic tourists staying from an average of 5.7 days in 1996. The popularity in due to several known seaside resorts located in the region, while the Pyrenees are in attraction in themselves. The region offers climbing and skiing and the chance to cross Spain, with popular resorts in either end. The third most popular destination is the Atlantic coast, but its beaches and resorts are much more scattered than on the Cote d' Azur region.

French tourists who's main motive for travelling is simple relaxation accounted for 43% of the market, while second in rank were visiting their parents or friends with a share of 27%. Tourist activities as such come low on the main motivations for travelling away from home, which also include travel relating to French domestic tourism. Nonetheless, seaside holidays still represent more than 45% of trips by French tourists within their own nation. Majority of French tourist go south to the Cote d Azur or to the west coast for their summer holidays.

Article Abstract:

The airplane was increasingly used as a mode of transportation for outgoing tourism in France during 1992 to 1996. The said form of transportation overtook use of cars by 1995 and is attributed to reduced airfares. The importance of car travel is not projected to decrease as numerous individuals in France continue to holiday in neighboring Spain and Italy. Cars represent the easiest, most convenient and the cheapest form of transports for many families.
