Article Abstract:

New Zealand's indigenous Maori people are reviving 'moko' to assert their rights and fight racism. 'Moko' are facial, torso and leg tattoos, which were once used by Maoris to convey power, fearsomeness and social status. The practice of having 'moko' was abandoned by the Maoris when New Zealand's British government placed restrictions on Maori 'tohunga' or priests in 1863. However, more Maoris are having tattoos to promote the Maori heritage.
