Article Abstract:

Corporations are increasingly being held responsible not only for their immediate surroundings but also for their impact on the whole planet. However, this scenario provides corporations with ample opportunities for new products, services and technologies. Companies have come to recognize the need for a more proactive and innovative stance in managing their environmental risk. Furthermore, companies which have implemented comprehensive risk management programs successfully were found to have integrated environmental concerns into their corporate str ucture.

The shape of the EC and sustainable development: an interview with Carlo Ripa di Meana

Article Abstract:

Italian Minister of the Environment Carlo Ripa di Meana considers the carbon/energy tax as the most cost-effective measure to save energy because it shall initiate more efficient technologies and increase competitiveness in the EC. Miana refutes the US's view that stringent environmental rules would lead to unemployment and cites the example of Japan which has successfully created employment and new industries through strong environmental regulations. He urges consumers to change their consumptive lifestyles to one that is more environment-friendly.
