Managing in Asia

Article Abstract:

A survey of 3,000 business executives and professionals in Asia found a high degree of economic confidence, especially in Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines and China. Some 40% of all respondents believe that profits in their industry will increase by at least 10% between 1993 and 1994. Less confidence was evident in Japan, with only 11% forecasting large increases in profit. Reducing executive privileges was the most frequent response to a question on reacting to reduced earnings. Other survey queries focused on sales in domestic markets, product quality, developing markets and headquarters location.

Men account for 92% of business executives in Asia, according to a survey of subscribers to Far Eastern Economic Review magazine in 10 Asia-Pacific countries. Some 78% are nationals of Asia-Pacific countries, while one-third of expatriate business executives are from Asia-Pacific. For male business executives, the median age is 44, while for women business executives the median age is 35. The survey also covered executives' views about political, economic and social issues. On the question of whether economic prosperity should take priority over political freedom, a small majority were in favour.

A survey of 3,000 'Far Eastern Economic Review' subscribers in ten countries reveals perceptions about the values held by businesses and businesspeople in eleven Asian nations. Topics covered include ethics, foreign employees, management styles, aggressive employees, businesses' social responsibility, workers' rights and corruption.
