Malaysia's nasty bruising

Article Abstract:

Former Malaysian deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has been sacked and arrested and showed bruising when he appeared in public after his arrest. Anwar's claim to have been beaten on his arrest was supported by a medical examination. Public sympathy was aroused by his injuries, and the campaign for reform appears to have intensified rather than dying down after his arrest. Malaysia faces a sharp economic contraction and controls imposed by the government could simply postpone the impact of problems.

North Korea wishes to charge the US for inspections of suspected nuclear facilities, and the US has refused to make such a payment. This means that an agreement between the US and North Korea to control the North Korean nuclear industry is in jeopardy. Congress would not agree to a payment by the US to examine underground facilities, though South Korea has suggested payment in medicine and grain.
