Malaysia's partly-privatized airport authority, Malaysia Airports Behrad, already has 28% of its shares listed in the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange. The Finance Ministry and Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which have retained 72% of the interest, have decided to float an additional 20% of the shares to foreign institutional investors in 2000. This will enable the authority to further access external sources of debt and equity funds for future expansion. The airport authority has been profitable since 1992 and achieved a 45% profit growth in 1998.

Penang Airport at Bayan Lepas, Malaysia, is the second busiest airport in the country, with over 2.5 million passengers a year. Traffic jumped from 1.9 million passengers in 1990 to almost 3 million in 1997, only to fall back to 1992 levels in 1999. The airport is believed to be finally back on track with throughput estimated to rise to 2.75 million in 2000. The airport hopes to win more charter traffic and increase its European services. Its toughest challenge comes from the other gate airports in the country.

Malaysia Airports Bhd remains commited to its aggressive expansion plan despite the regional economic crisis. The authority is pursuing the expansion of the catchment area of the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which, with the expansion, will be able to accommodate over 16 million passengers a year. At Penang, Malaysia's second-busiest airport, the addition of a second level to the terminal will double the airport's capacity from 2.5 million passengers to 5 million.
