Mahathir wields the levers of power: amid political turmoil, government sets draconian capital controls

Article Abstract:

Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad imposed stringent capital controls to stem currency speculation which is wreaking havoc on the economy. Dr. Mahathir has done away with the high interest rates and tight government spending imposed by the International Monetary Fund in lieu of easy credit and increased government spending to jumpstart the ailing Malaysian economy. The drastic capital controls measure includes the one-year ban on the repatriation of investments and investment earnings by foreign stock investors and the limited foreign exchange holdings by Malaysians.
