Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party returned to power on Oct 20, 1996, winning 239 out of 500 seats in the Diet. The party also gained support from two of its former coalition partners, giving it about 270 votes. It appears that Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto will rule in a manner similar to the party's past.

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party is being challenged by the newly formed New Japan Party. The troubled majority party is also being challenged by the Rengo-no-Kai party. While the Liberal Democrats will probably remain in power, the challenger will find it easier to pass through legislation they support.
