Catholics in Sudan see the forthcoming meeting of Pres Omar Bashir with Pope John Paul II as an attempt to disguise the persecution of Christians by the fundamentalist regime. The Church openly supports rebel forces, which it sees as the only hope for Christianity in Sudan.
