UK sales of large domestic appliances reached some 8 million units in 1998/99, with a value of nearly 2.4 billion pounds sterling. Washing machines and clothes dryers accounted for around 37% of the value market, followed by refrigerators and freezers with 30%, gas and electric cookers with 26% and dishwashers with 7%. Washing machine sales for the period totalled 2.15 million units, worth 727 million pounds sterling. Sales of large domestic appliances in 2003 are forecast to reach 9 million units, valued at 2.9 billion pounds sterling

Domestic appliances production in Germany reached some 17 billion German marks in 1998, up 3% from previously, with exports up around 9% and imports by some 3%. Retail sales for the period are estimated at 21 billion German marks, up 3%. Retail sales of audio-visual goods for 1998 totalled 16.1 billion German marks, although sales of hi-fi equipment fell sharply. Retail sales of telecom equipment reached 2.97 billion German marks, with sales of home computers estimated at 10.5 billion German marks for the year, up 30% from 1997.
