The US may find it hard to hold together its alliance against terrorism, following the start of air attacks against Afghanistan. Some allies are urging the US not to widen the campaign beyond Afghanistan, while some are concerned over the humanitarian impact of the attacks.

The US's 2001 Quadrennial Defence Review (QDR) calls for massive new investment in both high-tech and low-tech equipment. The QDR says the US needs a 'forward presence', and talks of the 'broad arc of instability' between north-east Asia and the Middle East.

Article Abstract:

People in the US have turned towards religion and patriotism following the Sep 2001 terrorist attacks, and there seems to be wide support for military action. However, this unity may not last in the long-term, especially if there are civilian casualties.
