Junius Jayewardene

Article Abstract:

Lawyer and politician Junius Jayewardene grew up in Sri Lanka when it was still ruled by the British. He became a lawyer, but was increasingly attracted towards politics. He assisted in the creation of the pro-western United National Party and held a number of ministries following independence in 1948. However, he did not become prime minister of Sri Lanka until 1977, when he was almost 71. He was often accused by his opponents of being a dictator, but believed that strong rule from the top was necessary if Sri Lanka was to avoid anarchy.
