Japan's debt menace

Article Abstract:

There is concern that Japanese government spending aimed at boosting economic growth could create problems from a large government debt level. Gross public debt could reach 108.5% of Japan's gross domestic product in 1999. There are disputes on the significance of such a high debt level. Some economists emphasise government assets and underplay the significance of the debt, while others are concerned about the ageing population and see the debt as worse than official figures.
