Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications PLC's (BT Cellnet's) lead in the U.K. wireless Internet market has not helped the company in overcoming U.K. consumers' wariness of WAP (wireless application protocol). The firm reported that in the second quarter, only roughly one in four of BT Cellnet's new customers requested a WAP-enabled phone, and only 200,000 WAP handsets have been sold in the U.K. overall.

Article Abstract:
WIND Telecommunicazioni S.p.A. is launching its fixed-line and mobile telecommunications services Mar 1, 1999. The converged service is expected to intensify competition in a market already roiled by the takeover battle between Olivetti S.p.A. and Telecom Italia S.p.A. WIND's larger rivals have not yet integrated their cellular and fixed-line businesses. WIND hopes to gain an 18% share of Italy's cellular market and a 13% share of the fixed-line market by 2003, and expects to break even by 2002. The firm is offering billing by the second, and plans to attract customers with new services, including Internet packages.
