Italian NUMC picks up speed

Article Abstract:

Fincantieri, Italy's main naval shipbuilder, has unveiled the second of four Nuova Unita Minore Combattente (NUMC) light patrol frigates for the Italian Navy. The 1,500-yon ship, to be named Comandante Borsini, was put to the water on Feb 17, 2001 at Riva Trigoso. The vessel was designed to boost Italian Navy surface patrols in the Mediterranean Sea and will help counter the smuggling to Europe of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa.

VCSELs go ultra-violet

Article Abstract:

Sandia National Laboratories and its partner, Brown University, have demonstrated a prototype of what they claim is the first ultra-violet solid-state microcavity laser. Potential applications of the device, called ultra-violet vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, include the detection of biological and chemical agents, together with weapons-grade fissionable materials.
