New use for composite materials

Article Abstract:

Pultruded glass reinforced plastic (GRP) was developed in the 1950s but has only been used for construction purposes in the 1990s. Pultrusion creates a non-porous, continuous material with the glass fibres carefully alligned to act as reinforcement material. Pultruded GRP has been used for bridge enclosures where it can protect the structure and facilitate access. The first pultruded GRP structure is a footbridge at Aberfeldy, Scotland.

Steel appeal

Article Abstract:

The Cummins Components Plant in Darlington, UK, is a well-constructed building which has an architectural consistency. This is because the factory was conceived as a single space, so that the same architecture is used for all the types of room, such as office space, factory space and the canteen. The building was designed by John Dinkeloo and Kevin Roche and built in 1963-65.
