Investors in the Japanese stock market are faced with the difficult task of assessing which companies are committed to restructuring while less forward-looking companies run the risk of bankruptcy. Investing in the Japanese stock market is extremely risky, with the skill lying in identifying companies that clearly focus on key businesses and are willing to take difficult decisions. It is worth considering investing in the financial services sector, where there is likely to be a clear division between successful companies and unsuccessful ones as a result of Big Bang deregulation.

An imaginary Asian share portfolio worth $100,000 with a strong exposure to Malaysia performed well in the second quarter of 1998. The largest gain in value terms was achieved through investment in Malaysia Airlines. An imaginary portfolio with strong exposure to South Korea was much less successful in the same period. Potential growth areas in the third quarter of 1998 include Hong Kong, where the stock market will perform well if the interbank rate is around 8%.
