Hutchison Whampoa chose to close the Hongkong Hilton despite $14 million recently spent on renovations and an ad campaign promoting it as the 'hotel for the 21st century' because it would be worth more as office space. The hotel was valued at HK$500 million while the land value was HK$1 billion. Though the staff was surprised by the decision, 400 of the 863 employees were already hired by a new Li Ka-shing hotel by the farewell party and the rest expected to be hired soon because of a shortage of skilled workers.
