In the mill

Article Abstract:

Du Pont has acquired Pioneer Hi Bred, in which the company held a stake of 20%. The acqusition of seed companies gives access to a market and to seeds on which to carry out research. The seed industry has seen a rise in value of the companies involved. Consolidation could bring concerns about competition. Some farmers are selling their grain to companies that supply the seed. Farmers may feel trapped by this trend toward vertical integration, and they fear losing control of the business if the same company buys their outputs as sells them their inputs.
