Article Abstract:
The United Nations and Indonesia have investigated killings in East Timor after a referendum vote in favor of indpendence. The reports by both the UN and Indonesia see the army as involved in murders, torture, rapes, and forcible removal of people from East Timor. General Wiranto has been asked to leave the government, and looks set to go, though he has initially refused. Meanwhile, there is concern that corrupt businessmen and Islamist groups may want to take over the government, as well as the military.
