Article Abstract:

The US and British governments appear to want transparency from commercial scientists, and for them to operate as though they were academic scientists. their declaration on genetic research has led to drops in stock prices for biotech companies. They are especially concerned about Celera, despite not mentioning that company by name. The heads of government appear to want the company to donate the fruits of its research as an act of charity. The key issue that should be addressed relates to intellectual property protection that should be available for such research.

Article Abstract:

Dundee, Scotland, has seen the development of a biotechnology industry, aided by Dundee University. The biochemistry department was expanded in 1978 and attracted funds in the 1980s at a time when university budgets were under pressure from the government. The Wellcome Trust has donated funds for a building, and the expansion has attracted further funds from Scottish Enterprise Tayside. The city offers low-cost housing, which helps in retaining academics. Cyclacel is a biotechnology start-up which has successfully raised funds.

Article Abstract:

European environmentalists sustained a severe setback after the European Parliament approved continent-wide patents on genetic inventions in Jul 1997. Lobbying by environmentalists had stemmed the growth of European biotechnology companies, which pale financially in comparison with their more successful American counterparts. The decision by European Parliament was an encouraging indication that environmentalists are retreating.
