How to cut the cost of politics

Article Abstract:

The US campaign finance system needs a more far-reaching reform effort than the one proposed by Pres Clinton in his 1997 State of the Union address. The US should reject the Supreme Court's notion that political advertising is protected by the First Amendment and impose strict limits on political ads.

Article Abstract:

Campaign finance plays a role in politics around the world, but nowhere are the amounts of money raised for campaigns larger than in the US. Campaign finance rules have been undermined by the defense of free speech, but Americans may need to consider equity in controlling campaign contributions.

Pres Bush is planning to veto a bill for congressional campaign finance reform. The bill requires candidates to follow spending limits, and they in turn earn certain benefits. The bill is flawed in that it preserves rules that protect congressional incumbents.
