Honour at stake

Article Abstract:

Prabowo Subianto, the youngest general in Indonesia, has appeared before a military honour council. It is alleged that he arranged the abduction and torture of more than 20 pro-democracy activists during the two-year period in which he headed the country's Special Forces regiment. He has gained a reputation for being extremely ambitious, and has not succeeded in forging real links with his fellow officers. As a result, he now appears very isolated. His own family has been negatively affected by his unwise statements in the closing months of the Suharto presidency.

Burma road

Article Abstract:

Asean leaders announced their intention to accept Burma, Laos and Cambodia into the trade organisation without designating a time schedule for admission. The applications are still being reviewed, according to Asean officials at the Nov. 1996 Asean summit in Jakarta, Indonesia. The three countries will probably be accepted in 1997, says Jusuf Wanandi of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta.
