Article Abstract:

Switzerland's colorful history and rich cultural heritage are showcased at its most important museums. Foremost among these are the Kunstmuseum in Basel, which houses the country's most valuable art collections, and the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, which documents the history of each of the country's regions and has exhibits on sacred arts, medieval life, Romanesque and Gothic traditions and the prehistoric era. Other notable museums are the Chateau de Prangins, The Abbey Library of St. Gall, Kunsthaus Zurich, Museum of Art and History, and the Historical Museum of Berne.

Tinguely in Basle

Article Abstract:

The Museum Jean Tinguely, Basle, Switzerland's 28th museum, is dedicated to Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely. The museum, which was designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, houses a wide selection of Tinguely's works which include reliefs, paintings, machines and mechanical sculptures from the 1950s to the 1980s. The museum also features drawings and articles describing the sculptor's European and American projects. Tinguely's works reflect his vital and fascinating personality.

Switzerland has a substantial number of private art collections which contain works originating from different countries. These art collections include the E.G. Buhrie Foundation and Collection, the Fondation L'Hermitage, the Langmatt Foundation, the Villa Flora or the Hahnloser Collection, the Oskar Reinhart Collection, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation and Collection, the Beyeler Foundation, and the Barbier-Muller Museum.
