Article Abstract:
Indonesia's self-sufficiency in rice production seems threatened by a number of both temporary and structural problems. A drought and a Brown Hopper infestation will force the country to import rice in 1995, the third time in five years, causing minimal economic disruption but political turmoil. The country is also losing 40,000 to 47,000 hectares of rice land annually, and trying at great expense to create 114,000 more each year into the 21st century. Changing diet patterns and rising income may render the issue moot.

Article Abstract:
Guidebooks to the Philippines are generally inadequate and outdated. They elaborate on the nightlife in parts of Manila that the mayor has now closed; they laud the loud, obnoxious, ubiquitous jeepney. 'Cockatoo's Handbook: Philippines' was last published in 1990, but at least it details the 1980s battles between Communist guerrillas and government troops, and describes the best coastal tours past the battle sites.
