Article Abstract:

President Didier Ratsiraka tried to implement a communist economy in Madagascar but the experiment failed terribly and he and his prime minister handed over power to a provisional government led by Albert Zafy. Centralized businesses and farms stagnated, farms failed and the people starved.

Three years of public protest against the socialist dictatorship of Didier Ratsiraka resulted in Madagascar's first democratic election on Feb 10, 1993. Albert Zafy, the newly elected president, will try to revive the economically devastated country.

At long last: Madagascar

Article Abstract:

A constitution was widely approved by 6 million voters on Aug 19, 1992, and a presidential election should take place during the next two months. Malagasy federalists opposed the idea of a 'unitary' constitution.
