Gazprom, Russia's gas monopoly, has given in to government demands and has agreed to adopt a more public-oriented pricing policy. The agreement is significant because it is expected to affect other Russian monopolies and because it is expected to help the Russian economy.

Pass the rum: Brazilian energy policy
Article Abstract:
The government of Brazil is planning to develop electrical power plants that generate power by using sugar cane residue left over after ethanol production. Such power plants would be cheaper to operate and safer for the environment than hydroelectric plants.

Cost-cutting measures on the part of the US oil and gas industries have result in improved profit margins for several major oil companies. Chevron, Amoco, Mobil and Texaco have posted profits recently. The industry has laid off may employees in recent years.
